Something slithered in the dark far below. He could somehow hear it over the pounding of his heart against his rib cage. The steps leading down didn't seem strong enough to hold the weight of a feather let alone a man. But he had to do it. He had to let the darkness swallow him one last time. There was no other way.
The body was down there.
